Widening participation in higher education- supporting access, success and progression for diverse students at the University of Lincoln
Rebecca Sanderson, Dr Rachel Spacey (Lincoln)
For successive governments and regulators widening participation in higher education means supporting students from diverse backgrounds to access HE, succeed (achieve a ‘good-honours degree’ at the same rate as other students) while here, and to progress on to ‘graduate level’ employment afterwards. Despite years of investment and work around outreach, pedagogy and student support by universities, significant gaps in access, attainment and progression still exist for some student groups. This session considers widening participation in the context of our institution, providing an overview of current activity and opportunities to get involved. The presenters will also provide a brief overview of Dr Rachel Spacey’s recent research with explored the student experience and needs of estranged students.
Using PeerMark for student peer review
Hilary Hamnett (Lincoln)
Students can get a lot out of peer assessment – it helps them to understand the marking criteria, put their own work into context and hone their attention to detail. Giving professional feedback to peers is also a key skill for forensic as well as other scientists. This talk is about how to use the PeerMark function in turnitin to facilitate a paper-free peer review assessment, and includes some hints and tips from my experience using it in 2019/20.
